A parliamentary answer to MSP Murdo Fraser has revealed that there have been 152 fatal accidents on the A9 between Perth and Inverness since 1985 – the year when the last major section of dual carriageway was completed.
Another parliamentary answer to Murdo Fraser also reveals that there have been 2,786 accidents that have resulted in people injured on the A9 between Perth and Inverness since 1985.
Murdo believes that the high number of fatal accidents over the years on the stretch of the A9 between Perth and Inverness is evidence that dualling the road must be a priority for the SNP Government.
Commenting on the statistics, Murdo said:
“It is sad to learn that the A9 stretch between Perth and Inverness has claimed so many lives over the years. 152 fatal accidents since 1985 is an extremely high toll and we must remember that every fatal accident recorded is an accident that devastates a family and a community.
“The simple truth is that there are too many deaths on the A9 and action must be taken to improve this road. The volume of traffic on the A9 has increased over the years and the SNP Government must realise that more accidents and fatalities will occur on the road the longer that it takes to dual the A9 between Perth and Inverness. The SNP Government cannot dither on the dualling of the A9 any longer and it must commit funds to dual the A9 in its entirety from Perth to Inverness once the Strategic Transport Projects Review is published later this year.
“The statistics show that there have been almost 3,000 accidents on the A9 since 1985. It is unacceptable for one road to cause so many accidents and fatalities.”
